What is Bone Tumors
Tumors are spreading throughout the world. There are various types of tumors. A bone tumor is one of them.
Mass or lump of tissues can be formed in the body due to various reasons. Sometimes it is due to abnormal cell division. This lump due to uncontrollably cell division is called cancer.
Normally, bone tumors are not fatal and they stay there where they are. But they are abnormal cells and don’t respond properly. Therefore, they should be treated and controlled. Otherwise, they will harm more cells and make them abnormal. This will compress the healthy bone and can do permanent damage.
There are two types of tumors.
- Benign tumors
- Malignant tumors
Malignant tumors can develop and cause cancer. These tumors can grow and spread in the whole body.
A healthy diet that is good for the health of the bones such as collagen peptides and improved lifestyle can lower the risk of bone tumors.
In this article, we will discuss different types of bone tumors prevention and proper treatment.
Benign Bone Tumors Types:
Malignant tumors are more fatal than benign tumors. But benign tumors are more common. Osteochondroma is the most common type of benign tumor in the United States of America according to the AAOS. Teenagers are at higher risk of this tumor.
Ends of the long bones of arms and legs are more prone to osteochondromas. Specifically, this tumor affects femur, tibia, and humerus.
This tumor may be in one bone or several bones of the body at the same time.
Nonossifying Fibroma Unicameral:
Its a simple and true cyst of the bone. Children are more prone to Nonossifying fibroma unicameral. Usually, it affects leg bone.
Giant Cell Tumors:
Giant cell tumors attack adults and grow aggressively. This is a rare type of tumor and found in the rounded end of the bone.
It is also a type of cyst and affects the bone marrow. They affect the bones of the hands and feet of the children.
This is a gene mutation and affects the density of the bones and makes them more fragile. Fibrous dysplasia makes bone more vulnerable to fracture.
Aneurysmal Bone Cyst:
This is another type of bone tumor. This weakens the cells in the bone marrow due to the abnormal behavior of the blood vessels in the bones. It affects growth plates and grows rapidly.
Malignant Bone Tumor Types:
There are also various types of malignant bone tumors. Cancers which are originated in the bones are in a lesser amount than other types of cancers.
There are two types of malignant bone tumors:
- Primary bone tumors
- Secondary bone tumors
Primary Bone Tumors:
Three types of primary bone tumors are very common.
Osteosarcoma is the second most common type of bone tumor. It affects the hip, knee, or shoulder of the children and adolescents. It grows rapidly and it is very dangerous as it can spread to the other bones of the body.
Osteosarcoma affects the growth plates of the bones. It affects lower leg bone and the lower end of the thigh bone.
Ewing Sarcoma Family of Tumors:
As it is a family of tumors. It can affect almost every person of every age. Normally, it affects the skull, upper arms, pelvis, backbone, and some other bones of the body.
It can affect the production of bone marrow in the bones as it develops in the cavities of the bones.
ESFTs can affect some other parts of the body as well including fat, blood vessels, muscle, and some tissues.
Chondrosarcoma is more common in adults and middle-aged people. Hips, shoulders, and pelvis are more prone to get affected than other bones of the body.
Secondary Bone Cancer:
Types of cancers which start in other parts of the body and then spread to the bones. These types of cancers affect older adults normally as their immune system and bones are weak.
Kidney, lung, and thyroid cancer are some types of secondary bone cancers.
Multiple myeloma is the most common type of secondary cancer that affects bone marrow.
What are the Causes of the Tumors:
According to the researches, the exact cause of the tumor is still unknown. Bone injuries, radiations, and genetics may be some of the possible reasons but still, there is a lot yet to be explored.
Any part of the body that grows rapidly can cause a tumor. Metal implants in the body can also cause tumors in the body.
Diagnosis of Bone Tumors:
Diagnosis of bone tumor is not very simple and at home, you can’t judge tumor if it is in the initial or middle stage. The expert will recommend a variety of tests to diagnose cancer. If you are a victim, he may recommend more tests to find out the type of cancer.
He may ask you your family history to find out if it is genetic or not.
He may recommend:
- Blood tests
- Imaging tests
- Urine tests
How Tumors are Treated?
Benign tumors are dangerous sometimes and sometimes they don’ require any action. Tracking them properly and keeping the record can help your doctor to take action when required.
Sometimes, bone tumors disappear, stay the same, or grow. Doctors perform surgery to remove these tumors or they can become malignant tumors and make bones more fragile.
Malignant tumors are serious and doctors may closely take care of that patient. Now methods of treatment are more refined, cancers are more treatable if diagnosed in time.
Proper treatment depends on the type of cancer. Curing cancer will be more difficult for effected cells spread to the other parts of the body.
Anti Cancer Foods:
Some foods contain anti-cancer properties. Doctors recommend medications and these foods to cure cancer and prevention.
Here are some foods which may contain anti-cancer properties.
- Broccoli (It contains sulforaphane)
- Carrots can also decrease the risk of cancers.
- Beans and berries
- Grass fed beef bone broth as it is rich in gelatin that can improve bone health.
- Olive oil
- Citrus fruits
- Flex seeds
- Fatty fish
The doctor may ask you to prevent certain foods to cure cancer properly.
